Led by boys team champion Wakeland, Frisco ISD swimmers and divers showed again at the Region 3-5A meet why the District is known statewide as a power in the pool.
Swimmers from FISD combined to win 14 events at the meet Saturday at Bruce Eubanks Natatorium, led by five victories by the Wakeland boys team, which finished atop the boys team standings.
The Wolverines will now aim for a 5A state title on Feb. 14-15, when they and dozens of other FISD swimmers and divers will compete at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Championships in Austin.
“Frisco ISD swimming is unreal,” Wakeland coach Melissa Howard said. “I think our district is the fastest in the state and there’s so much depth. These kids just know what they have to do.”
FISD’s depth showed in the Region 3-5A team standings, as seven girls teams finished in the top 10 and five boys teams finished in the top 10. Reedy finished on the medal stand for the girls, climbing to third in the standings with a thrilling come-from-behind win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Frisco High boys also got on the medal stand, finishing third in the team standings.
The Wakeland boys were well in front from the start, when they opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The Wakeland boys swept the three relays at the meet, also winning in the 200 and 400 freestyle.
Independence’s Sienna Schellenger was selected at the outstanding girls athlete of the meet after winning the 50 and 100 freestyle races and swimming a leg of the winning 200 free relay team.
